Coastal School Northland

About Us

Our unique location

Ngunguru is located 24 kms north east of Whangārei, situated along the scenic Tutukaka coast. A growing community, Ngunguru is approximately 20 minutes drive from the outskirts of Whangarei, which is 2 hours north of Auckland.

Serving the larger population base of the Tutukaka coast, our school is a full state primary, catering for students Years 0-8, with a current roll of approximately 240 students.

The environment is something we are very committed to. We know how lucky we are to live and learn in such a unique and special place. As a result of this we run several educational programmes that promote sustainability and care of Papatuanuku.

Earth Education

Our Earth Education programme is the showcase of our localised curriculum. This programme is delivered by a specialist teacher to all levels of the school.

Our students learn about maintaining and restoring the special and unique environment we have here at Ngunguru.

It is a hands-on, science based programme that also works with local community groups to support the great environmental work they are doing around Ngunguru and Tutukaka.

Our school is surrounded by stunning native bush. Our teachers and students use the bush environment on a daily basis, whether it be using the tracks or visiting our outdoor classroom platform where teaching takes place.

Garden to Table

The Garden to Table programme is part of our year seven and eight programme. Our students are involved in growing, harvesting, preparing, cooking and eating the vegetables that we grow in our garden beds.

We also have school chickens that we have raised from their time as eggs in our incubator.

Tahi Bees Programme

We have a set of bee hives in our school from which we harvest honey. Again our year seven and eight students are involved and are trained in the craft of beekeeping through this programme.

We sell our honey for fundraising purposes and it is delicious!

Education Outside
of the Classroom

We offer a number of different Education Outside of the Classroom opportunities across the school.

Our local marae - Paratene te Manu is used for noho.

The school has its own boat which is used as part of our Earth Education programme.

We own a number of kayaks that are used by our senior students to develop their kayaking skills.

We also make use of our local outdoor adventure providers such as DIVE Tutukaka for our year seven and eight annual diving trip to the Poor Knights and Surf for the year five and six yearly surfing experience.

Camps are held annually from years three to eight with the peak experience in year eight being a week-long camp at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre just out of Turangi.

Strategic Plan & Annual Reports

Te mahi tahi kia eke ki te hiranga mo ia tamaiti - working together to achieve excellence for every child.

Here at Ngunguru School, we have designed a three-year strategy that places our learners at the heart of every decision, plan and initiative.
